Machine learning interview questions cover implementing metrics and algorithms from scratch, plus the pipeline and evaluation reasoning behind production systems.
Machine learning questions in engineering interviews are rarely about deriving algorithms. They are about implementing the pieces correctly from scratch — a loss function, an evaluation metric, a similarity measure, a sampling routine — and about reasoning through the surrounding system: how training data is produced, how models are evaluated, and how a change is proven to be an improvement.
The reliable differentiator is evaluation. Candidates who can implement a metric but cannot say what it would miss, or how they would tell whether a model is genuinely better in production rather than on a held-out set, get read as academic. Naming train-test contamination, class imbalance, and the difference between offline metrics and an online experiment covers most of what interviewers are probing for.

Enough to implement common metrics and algorithms correctly and to explain the trade-offs. Interviewers are usually more interested in evaluation design and data handling than in derivations.
Talking about how the result would be validated. Describing the offline metric, its known blind spots, and the online experiment that would confirm the improvement is what distinguishes production experience.
