Design a Parking Lot is a medium low-level design interview question covering low level design, object oriented design, design patterns, class design, thread safety — the kind asked at FAANG (Facebook/Meta, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) and AI-first companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Nvidia.
Design the software for a parking garage with about 1,000 spots across 5 floors. It handles motorcycles, cars and buses; a smaller vehicle may use a larger spot when nothing smaller is free, and a bus needs a run of three contiguous compact spots. Pricing is hourly with a free first half hour, different rates per vehicle type and a daily cap, and marketing changes it constantly. There are four entry gates and four exit gates, all active at once.
